THE KINGDOM OF SHADES

The Kingdom of Shades is a series of experiments on the vocabulary of ballet. Through various strategies, Noé Soulier disrupts its inner logic and to make it visible spatially and temporally. He only uses classical ballet steps in order to focus the attention on the way the movements are put together. The use of ballet vocabulary is thus a means for the exploration of this very vocabulary.

SIGNE BLANC

Signe blanc prolongs the research from The Kingdom of Shades within ballet mime vocabulary. The dancer starts by saying the meaning of the mime gestures as he performs them, but progressively the words and the gestures get more and more contradictory. The body becomes the source of multiple messages that complement, transform or contradict each other. The meaning is not anymore in the message itself but in the interaction between the messages, between what you hear and what you see. The opposition is then transposed within the body, as two gestures are performed at the same time. The gap between the meanings of the two gestures gradually increases until the performer is torn between these contradictory signs. The gestures are then performed in a continuous flow until they form a sequence at the edge of meaning and abstract movement.

REMOVING

Removing explores movement qualities produced by practical goals such as hitting, avoiding, throwing, or reaching. These actions constitute a vocabulary of gestures that is shared with the audience. One rarely thinks of creating a line with one’s leg or of dropping the weight of one’s arm, whereas most of our daily movements are motivated by practical goal: to reach a location, to seize an object, to avoid a piece of furniture, etc. Using a common vocabulary enhances physical empathy and kinesthetic resonance.

The composition uses several kinds of unison by choosing different parameters the movement sequences can have in common: same geometrical structure in space, same type of action, same body part, etc. The resemblance can be extremely strong or barely perceptible. They allow the creation of different types of counterpoint (duo + solo, duo + solo + solo, duo + duo, etc.). I try to play with what could be called visual density: the quantity, complexity and heterogeneity either with sudden contrasts or progressive evolution. This visual density can change suddenly, for example by going from a four voices counterpoint to a unison, or on the contrary, evolve progressively.
